The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and homes used by 19th-century black slaves in the United States to escape to free states and Canada with the help if abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It got its name because it was carried out as a secret.
